21/02/11Rough Magic Theatre Presents - Hansel and Gretel!

Rough Magic Theatre are proud to announce a new foray into the world of Toy Theatre performance; Hansel and Gretel.

Using our unique liquorice-decorated Toy Theatre,  we are currently scripting, building and composing a brand new 20-30 minute show based on the popular Germanic fairy tale, made famous by the Brothers Grimm.

Designed and drawn by RMT’s resident creative genius, Collette Knowles, with a script by writer and established Theatre Dramaturg, Tim Austin, Hansel and Gretel will also feature musical contributions by long time Rough Magic collaborator Leo Nolan.

Hansel and Gretel will also see Rough Magic Theatre return to the international stage for the first time since taking The Tempest on tour to Itally in 2001. We will be taking the show to the world-renowned Vischmarkt Papieren Theater Festival in the Netherlands between 1st and the 3rd of July. Please see the festival website here for more information.

We are currently seeking sponsorship to help us cover the costs of mounting this production. If you are interested in being a contributor, please e-mail us at

23/5/2007 Giant Jabberwocky terrorises town!

Along with our shadow puppet suitcase show Rough Magic also took our giant Jabberwocky puppet to the main parade at Blackpool’s “Puppet Up! 2007” festival. Built by RMT’s Collette Knowles for Bentham Theatre Group’s “Sleeping Beauty”, this massive puppet originally required six people to operate! After being renovated for “Puppet Up!” this was cut to two with the aid of a specially constructed backpack.

The Jabberwocky enjoyed his day out immensely, fighting with a knight in armour and terrorising the populace. In fact he enjoyed himself so much that he’s written a “blog” about it that can be found, along with photos of the event, at his MySpace page

23/5/2007 Suitcase show goes down a storm!

Rough Magic Theatre’s travelling suitcase show “Jabberwocky!” has been on the road, delighting audiences of all ages in Leeds, Wakefield and Blackpool.

On the 14th of April we took the show to Leeds for Ladyfest Leeds 2007, the festival celebrating women’s achievement in the arts. Our next stop was the Bretton Hall Fringe Festival on Sunday the 6th of May and finally Puppet Up! 2007, the Blackpool Festival of  Puppetry and Visual Theatre on the 19th and 20th of May.

We had a great time entertaining the crowds and the feedback has been wonderful. For those who didn’t catch the show we have some photos in the Gallery. We hope to be on tour with the suitcase again very soon so keep your eyes on the News page!
